The Black Death aka the Bubonic Plague aka the Great Plague...........cue suspenseful horror music now. Yes, the black death is a very scary name and it was an even scarier time for people of the Middle Ages. The black death was a mass pandemic that tore through the eastern hemisphere killing 1/3 of Europe's population which is about 50 million people. It lasted over three years, starting from Asia and spreading across Europe through the series of trade routes. People were constantly moving therefore constantly spreading the virus. Today, you are going to look at 4 documents that include maps and paintings that depicted the black death. Next class, we will talk even more in depth about the details of this great catastrophe.

Since early times, people have relied on trade to get products they desired but didn’t have. The distance people were able to travel expanded as knowledge of the world increased and technology improved.
Products such as salt, gold, silk, foods, art and spices became very valuable. Their value encouraged the development of trade routes and affected civilizations in many ways.
Trade really expanded during the middle ages and trade routes such as the Silk Road and the Trans-Saharan Network allowed for goods and ideas to be spread across the eastern hemisphere. Ideas and inventions grew as people were gaining more knowledge on the land and world around them.
The concept of ideas and goods being spread and adopted into new cultures is knows as cultural diffusion. Cultural diffusion is one of the most important things that came out of these extensive trade routes because it changed culture forever. It allowed cities and towns to grow, thrive, and evolve along with the changing times.
Your task:
1. Read the google doc about the basics of trade and trade fair.
2. Answer the following questions:
1. What was a marketplace?
2. What are trade fairs?
3. What could you find at a trade fair?
4. Who were not part of the feudal society(social class pyramid)?
5. Describe a merchant.
6. What were some of the merchants duties?
7. What were some of the benefits of trade?

Time to jump into the Middle Ages also known as the dark ages, woot woot!
The Middle Ages or medieval time is believed to have started with the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 and to have lasted about 1,000 years until about 1450.
Life was very hard in the Middle Ages. Very few people could read or write.
During the years of the Roman Empire, the poor people were protected by the soldiers of the emperor. When the empire fell, there were no laws protecting them, so they turned to the lords to keep the peace and to act on their behalf. This willingness to be ruled by the lords led to the beginnings of FEUDALISM.
Feudalism was a social, economic, and political system taken on by Europe in the Middle Ages. In order to keep the economy moving and society in order, strict social classes developed. The classes were largely determined by birth (family), and land ownership. People could rarely move from one class to another. Within each social class people had jobs to carry out. This type of social class system is illustrated by a pyramid.
Under the feudal system, everyone but the king had a ruling lord above him to whom he owed loyalty and service in exchange for land and protection. Some peasants were free, but most became serfs(worker) to the lords(wealthy people). This meant that they were required to stay with the land and pay very high rent to the lord.
Attached below is an example of the Feudalism Social Class Pyramid. Your task:
1.Read through the Pyramid
2. Answer the 4 questions at the bottom. You can answer these questions on a separate sheet of paper (send me a pic), google doc, or private comment.
Let me know if you have any questions!
p.s. A Fief is a piece of land that came with a "fee" of usually some kind of service. The noble would give the knights and vassals a fief in exchange for protection and military service.

Last week you read about the fall of the Roman Empire, now we are going to watch videos about it.....woot woot! Your task:
1. Watch video titled ROMAN EMPIRE first and write down three facts you found interesting. This is an overview on the Roman Empire as a whole to refresh our memory.
2. Watch Why did the Roman Empire fall? This basically sums up the article you read last week. You must also give me three facts from this video.
Your google doc/private comment should look like this:
Video 1: Fact 1-
Fact 2-
Fact 3-
Video 2: Fact 1-
Fact 2-
Fact 3-
The third video I have attached (the 19 minute history) is optional. The narrator talks at a very fast pace and dives in deep to the different riots and battles that lead to Rome's demise. He talks about a lot of the different leaders of Rome along with the different leaders of the barbarians and throws around a ton of different names. You do not need to know any of the specific names, it is just an entertaining video to watch if you want to see how complex the situation of Rome was. Again the third video is OPTIONAL, it is simply there if you are curious and want to dive deeper into Rome.
You all are doing so great. I am so proud of everyone and I miss you all. Keep up the hard work:)

The 5 main religions of Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Hinduism, may seem like they are completely different. Granted, they do have their fair share of differences, but they also have commonalities in their core beliefs. Religion is a set of beliefs that give people guidance and a purpose. One of the commonalities of the main religions, is that each of them have a "golden rule" (pieces of advice) that people live by. Today is going to be our first day looking at religions around the world. As historians, we understand that religion was behind all civilizations. For example, we looked at Egypt, who believed that the Pharaohs were chosen directly from their Sun God Ra. Religion is so prominent in all aspects of history and life. As followers of Christ, we love and accept all people even if their beliefs and opinions differ from ours. This is something we need to keep in mind as we dive deep into the 5 main world religions.
Your assignment today will be due by Wednesday and the directions are listed below!
1. Open up the world religions power point and read through it.
2. Open up the google doc attachment. It is a graphic organizer that you have to fill out on the 5 world religions.
3.In order to edit the attachment, you need to go to file and then press make a copy. This will make a copy of it into your drive and then that is the one you can edit and share with me. I have attached a video showing the steps if you need help.
4.Once you are ready to fill out the graphic organizer, you can use these three resources to find the information:
1. The PowerPoint
2. http://www.pewforum.org/global-religious-landscape.aspx

The definition of a legend is a traditional story often times based on historical events. As historians, we understand that looking at legends help us to understand different cultures around the world. Today we are going to take a look at the Legend of the Four Leaf Clover. This legend originated in Ireland and it is apt because yesterday was St. Patrick's Day. Granted this is a fun little reading, it is also going to help us get into an open mindset for our next unit of World Religions. It is important that we keep in mind that people have a right to their own beliefs and it is our job as followers of Christ to love and respect others even if their views are different from ours.
For this assignment, you are to read The Legend of the Shamrock and submit a response to the following questions. Please write in complete sentences and remember to press turned in once submitted!
1. What does the leaves of the shamrock represent and why?
2. How is this connected to St. Gregory the Great School?
3. What can you infer* about Irish people who believe in the legend of the shamrock?
4. The shamrock is also believed to bring you luck. We have a lot to feel lucky for especially during this questionable time. In 4 sentences tell me why/how you are lucky and blessed today.
*infer: conclude from evidence. make an educated guess
