We are continuing our human impact discussion and starting to talk about climate change and how humans have an effect on it!
Watch the video below (I posted two different links to the same video) and answer the following questions (I put a time stamp to help):
● 2:05: Why does Dr. Kammen say that we are “doing our best to become doomed”?
● 2:30: What are some of the effects of our warming climate?
● 2:44: What is the goal of the Paris Climate Agreement?
● 4:07: What does the IPCC do?
● 7:17: What are 3 types of changes that we can make (and already are making) to limit climate change?
● 8:04: What are we doing to adapt to climate change?
Opinion questions (write in complete sentences, must have an explanation)
● Do you have anxiety about climate change? Why or why not?
● Are you optimistic (confident) in our abilities to take on climate change? Why or why not?

Throughout the school year we have talked about the Earth's atmosphere layers, pollution, global warming, human impact on the environment, biomes, food webs, abiotic and biotic features, plate tectonics, boundary lines, Earth's rock strata, and much more. There has been a lot in this year so we are going to start refreshing our minds of these topics!
Today you are going to watch a video about human impact on the environment in the form of plastic water bottle usage. This video explores all angles of the debate on if plastic water bottles should be banned to help protect earth's ecosystems.
Your task is to answer the following prompt. Make sure you write in complete sentences.
1. It seems obvious that using fewer plastic water bottles would be a good thing for our environment, but sometimes the alternatives can have negative consequences. Does the cost of banning plastic bottles outweigh the benefits? Why or why not? Please write at least three sentences.
p.s. I posted the video twice in two different formats just in case one does not work for you! Let me know if you have any questions!

A lot of you have been making bird observations in your Field Note Journals so I have attached this video that explains why birds lay eggs in Spring along with an explanation on some of the loud birds you are hearing in your yards! These videos are in the form of a slide show so you have to press the arrow to continue on once each video ends :)
Your task:
1. Watch the power point videos
2. Answer the following questions in private comments or doc.
1. What is begging behavior?
2. What are Fledgelings?
3. Why do birds lay their eggs in Spring?

Due:
We are still ordering you T-Shirts (woot woot!) so please comment what size you will need! We have all kid and adult sizes. If you are not sure, ask your parents/grandparents what size shirt you are!
Due:
Hello my dears!
Today is the only field note journal you have to complete this week since it will probably rain the rest of the week. Have fun and I can’t wait to read your observations today (they are very entertaining to read)!

Due:
Yay for more observations! It’ll be 50 today so hopefully the sun is shining for you!
Due:
Watch the part 2 of the water glass video and tell me if your hypothesis was correct!
Due:
Watch the video below (ignore the cringe) and private message me what your hypothesis is. What do you think will happen when I put the postcard on the glass of water and flip it upside down?
Due:
Another day, another entry! Can’t wait to read your observations for today. It’s supposed to be 40 and partly sunny but I woke up to snow on the ground so if you do not want to be in the cold, you can make your observations from a window or back door. Just make sure you open it for a second to feel and smell the surroundings! Have fun!
Due:
Welcome back friends! I missed you all and hope you had a great break relaxing at home. Today we are going to talk about a guy named Rube Goldberg. Rube Goldberg was a cartoonist that created complex inventions to do pretty mundane tasks. For example, he created a very complex invention that would pour a glass of juice for him just so he didn't have to do the easy task himself. Now, even though he thought of these wacky inventions and made them into comic strips he never actually made the invention in real life. Instead, he inspired actual inventors to do so in the years to come. His name was actually added into the dictionary as a noun because this type of long obscure invention to complete easy tasks became known as Rube Goldberg Machines. You may have seen some of these machines in popular movies and tv shows. Below I linked some video clips of different machines along with an article about Rube Goldberg.
Your task:
1. Read the article on Rube Goldberg
2. Watch the video clips (they are super entertaining and ridiculous)
3. In three sentences tell me what type of Rube Goldberg Machine you would make and why (private message or google doc is fine!).
Personally I would make one that would fold my laundry for me because that is one task I just dread doing! Or I would have one that would make me a cup of coffee as soon as I wake up in the morning. That would be a dream!

Its going to be 60 today! Yay for beautiful weather! Have fun with this entry, enjoy the fresh air, and make sure you send me your observation page for credit.
ps. add to your plant growth chart :)

Due:
Excuse my poor video taking skills but I filmed the start of an experiment. I placed an egg in a glass full of vinegar and I’m going to let it sit until Monday. I want you to make a hypothesis of what you think is going to happen to the egg shell by Monday. Send me a private message of what your hypothesis is. Also the video cut me off but I will be posting updates on the egg!
Due:
Your second entry is due today. Same as Wednesday, sit outside (it’s beautiful!) for 20 minutes. Make notes of observations and take leasing your plants and add it to your graph. Use the same format and send me a pic of your entry once completed! Everyone did a fantastic job with this, I’m highly impressed!
Due:
Alright friends, here's the deal. You have been crushing the new distance learning but I have decided we are going to pause our Sound and Light now that we finished Unit 1. I feel like we have a solid grasp on the basic concept that all sound and light is energy that moves in waves. We will move deeper into this unit later on once we are back together again.
For now, I have thought of a different idea that is going to combine different science skills with nature. We are going to create our own Field Note Journal. Yay! I have attached the directions to what a field note journal entails and an example of an entry that I did today. This project allows you to enjoy the outdoors (your yard) while using your scientific and observational skills. You will be required to complete one entry each science day. You will send me a snapshot of your observations so I know that you are completing them. Yes, I will be doing this with you and sharing my entries each day as well! This should be enjoyable!
Your first entry is due today. Once you complete the journal entry, please take a picture and send it to me!
Let me know if you have any questions!
*PLEASE read through the guidelines. It explains everything. Also take a look at my example. Its the format you need to use.

This is the unit review that is in your workbook on page 29. Instead of making you write it in your workbook, I typed it into a Google Form. It says it is a Quiz but it is just an assignment! Please use your workbook to help you with the answers (they can all be found in the previous readings!). The form should tell you if you got the right answer or not. DO not worry if you get one wrong. Just try your best, it is a learning experience. Keep up the hard work!
Due:
I can hear some of your groans from here! I know some of you find his videos to be cringey and I can agree that they are super cheesy BUT he is amazing and giving facts and explaining concepts. This video not only explains that last two lessons you worked on in your books but he gets into the material we are going to be working on moving forward including: sound and light waves, sound technology, the electromagnetic spectrum and so much more.
-Your assignment is to watch this video (yes the WHOLE video, I'm trusting you) and then in the private comments give me 5 facts that you learned while watching.
I know, this is an easy day! It is also easy because a lot of people still have to turn in their Sound and Light lessons 1 and 2 so please please please take this time and turn in your assignments so I can give you a grade! (p.s. if you think you handed them in just double check that your pressed turned in or that I didn't leave you a note in the private comments)
You all are amazing and are doing amazing. Keep up the hard work!
Oh and just a disclaimer, for some reason all of the text in the video is backwards. I have no idea why so just ignore!

In lesson 1, you learned about what a wave is and the different types. Now we are going to look at the properties of waves and more specifically how to measure a wave. The three main properties of a wave are measurable and they are:
1. Amplitude: a measure of how far the particles in a medium(material) move away from their normal rest position.
2. Wavelength: the distance from a point on a wave to the same point on the next wave.
3. Frequency: how many cycles (waves) occur in an amount of time, usually one second.
You are going to read deeper into these three measurable properties and loom at how they are measured. For this assignment:
-Read through pages 14-25
-Highlight vocabulary and main concepts
-Complete side-bar activities (they help you practice)
-Complete page 25 and send it to me. You can either take a picture and upload or type your answers.
I have attached a video that visually helps explain the properties of a wave, please watch to help with extra understanding.
Keep up the great work!

Today we are going to take a look at the first introduction lesson to Sound and Light. You will need your Fusion Sound and Light book as your resource. Your directions for the day are:
1.Read and complete pages 4-13. This means you are highlighting while you are reading and answering any questions in the margins.
2.You are to complete page 13 and take a picture of it so I can see that it is done. You may attach it to a google doc and share it with me, you can email it to me, or you can send it in a private message on Google. Whatever is easier for you.
3.You also need to complete the 2 questions I have attached to this post.
Just a reminder: When you have completed the assignment and submitted page 13 and the two extra questions, please press the "turned in" button. This is how you will get your grade! You are doing great friends. Keep up the hard work and don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it. We are all in this together!

Due:
Students will have a test on Earth's Atmosphere on 9/30/19. Students received study material this week, I have attached copies below.
Side note: Convection, Conduction, and Radiation will be on the test but students will receive their note sheet on it next week.

Due:
Students will make a tri-fold brochure that discusses the causes and effects of climate change and what they can do to help stop it. The direction sheet includes sentence starters as well as what should be on each fold of the brochure. Where it asks for a picture, students will draw a colorful one. Everything should be handwritten but because I am giving them almost a full week to do it, I expect neat, straight, sentences and correct spelling.
