4th Grade Science ACE Days-2019-2020 Assignments

Your Science Final Project will be completed over three days during your scheduled science time. You will fill out the design brief Google Doc by typing in the boxes. All of this work should be completed by you, the student. You may ask for parent help cutting materials or gluing- BE SAFE! You will need to be creative with the materials in your house including how to test your solution. A rubric has been attached so you can see how you will be evaluated. You will need to turn in this document Thursday 6/11.

Day 1: Thursday 6/4
1. What is the problem?
2. Brainstorm solutions. You will need to start gathering materials for Day 2. Please let me know if you need help getting materials! You can always roll up newspaper, use legos, or anything around the house. ASK PERMISSION from parents please!

Today you will watch the Mystery Science slides for “Will a mountain last forever?” ⛰ There is an activity with sugar cubes. If you have some at home you should try it! If not, you can get the idea of the experiment with what is shown in the slides. You do not need to complete data sheets.

When you are done watching the lesson (Step 14 of 14) you will answer the question below. Then, if it’s not raining, take a walk and look for signs of root wedging or ice wedging.

Imagine that you did this experiment with rocks instead of sugar cubes. What would you get instead of loose sugar?

This week we will be starting a Mystery Science unit on Rock Cycles and Earth’s Processes. Today we will be exploring volcanoes! 🌋

Today you will start with the slides on the Mystery Science link below. When you get to the activity you can use the video Ellie helped me make. If you have the materials (water, flour, straws- those are the big ones) you can try this at home. Either way you will need to complete the two sheets in the google slides.

This week you will be completing a Mystery Science building on your knowledge of renewable energy.

Today you will finish the mystery up to slide 22. There is a new google slides for the final worksheet but make sure to finish up the ones from Monday and turn in the assignment if you didn’t finish them. Obviously we can’t have a group discussion like steps 21 & 22 say so skip to the final video.

In the “Extensions” there are more “videos about energy sources” for you to explore if you have time or are interested. I liked them. Reminds me of when my family drives for Christmas trees and I see all the windmills. You may want to try making a solar oven for your Free Choice Friday. I still have mine and would love to see how it works on a hot day- nachos anyone?

This week you will be completing a Mystery Science building on your knowledge of renewable energy.

Today you will complete the “EXPLORATION” portion and use the google slides for the worksheets. You will go through the slides and STOP AT STEP 19 of 22. You only need to work for 20-30 minutes today so if you need to stop before Step 19, then stop. We’re finishing this up Wednesday!

We’re at the end of Unit 10! Complete pages 529-530 about the Electric Grid. Then complete the Google Form attached. You should take the quiz as many times as it takes to get a perfect score. You can use the book to help you!

Today we will finish learning about electricity and how it changes into other forms of energy. Then you will complete the lesson review.

Today you will finish Lesson 4 by completing pages 510-514. Check the answers posted! Then complete the Google Form by clicking the link below.

Today we will learn more about electricity and circuits. Think about what you already know about insulators and conductors from Unit 9 and circuits from our school investigation trying to light the light bulb.

Read and complete pages 501-509. Answer keys are attached. We will finish the rest of the lesson next week. 🔋💡🔌

Ok so apparently the link for the original lesson doesn’t work. 🤨 So you are going to review lessons 1 and 2 and complete the quiz (Google Form attached below). Sorry for the confusion.

Today we will learn more about electricity including static electricity which we investigated last week in lesson 2. Read and complete pages 483-496. Answer keys are attached.

I put together a video including some intro phenomena to get us started thinking about electricity.

1. Watch the video and complete pages 497-498 in your book. You can pause the video to record your answers or complete the investigation on our own.
2. Then check your answers with the answer key provided. You may have a different outcome. I used balloons from Ellie’s birthday that have been on the rug. (Hint- the balloons I used were a little charged up!)
3. Lastly, answer the question below to let me know how things went! Enjoy investigating :)

Today you will be wrapping up Unit 9 Energy.
1. Complete pages 477-480. Use the book to help you!
2. Check your answers to the answer key posted below.

Wednesday we will start Unit 10 Electricity. We will be conducting an investigation Thursday! You will need the following materials if you can participate at home: 2 balloons, string, tape, wool cloth. Don’t worry if you don’t have these items. I will make a video for you to follow along.

Today you will complete the investigation by following the video. If you do not have the materials, just follow along with my results in the video. I had to make some adjustments based on the materials I had at home. You may need to as well. Complete pages 473-474 in your book and then complete the Google Form attached below.

Today we will learn more about insulators and conductors in lesson 5. Read and complete pages 463-472. Answer keys are attached.

Please follow the procedures on the attached Google Doc. There are three questions for you to answer. Don’t forget to Turn in this assignment.

Mrs. Peters Note: I did this with Ellie and I was a bit disappointed by my results. You will need to look closely to notice any changes. To improve my results, next time I would try putting my apparatus in a warmer area.

Today we will learn about Heat in lesson 2. Read and complete pages 447-458. Answer keys are attached.

Thursday, 4/2 we will complete an investigation. Please look for the following supplies around your house: food coloring, straw, clay/play dough, 16 oz. plastic bottle and tape. Don’t worry if you can’t find these items. I will make a video for you to follow along with.

Happy Friday Scientists! Today we are going to explore sound energy with Mystery Science.

2. Follow the link on the Google Doc to complete the Mystery Science lesson: How far can a whisper travel?
3. As you complete the lesson, you will complete the Google Doc. You will need a partner (brother, sister, mom, dad, etc) to complete this. If you don’t have the materials, do your best following along with the lesson video.
4. Then “turn in the assignment”. 😁 Answers have been attached for you to see.

Today we will finish Lesson 1 in Fusion book. Read and complete pages 434-443. You DON’T have to do page 444. Woo! Answer key is attached. Take a look at my added comments on the answer key. I also attached 2 videos I made of mechanical energy, thanks to Gilly and Teddy!

Today we will start Unit 9 Energy in the Science Fusion book. Read and complete pages 429-433. Answer key is attached. Take a look at my added comments on the answer key. After reading, look around the house for mechanical energy.

ALL tests need to be signed and returned by Friday 1/17. Anyone can complete test corrections but students who scored under 11 points MUST complete corrections. Let me know if you need help.

Please return your signed test by Monday, 11/4. Anyone with less than 21/28 points will need to complete corrections. All students have an opportunity to complete corrections but they must be returned by Monday.
