Woody Guthrie wrote many songs that were grouped together as the Dust Bowl Ballads. The picture on the front of the CD looks like a shack in a blizzard but it was actually dust piled high, not snow. The Dust Bowl was the name given to the drought-stricken Southern Plains region of the United States, which suffered severe dust storms during a dry period in the 1930s. As high winds and choking dust swept the region from Texas to Nebraska, people and livestock were killed and crops failed across the entire region.

Original Ballad in Google Classroom

Original Ballad

Now it's your chance to write your own ballad!
~Write it in any style you choose using one of the melodies from the ballads you've listened to in the assignments. (Please tell me which one you're using.)
~Make sure your ballad tells a story with a beginning, middle and end. NO REFRAIN! Put some thought into your story and the lyrics you chose. Think about the ballads you listened to.
~Make sure your ballad has at least three verses and follows the form (rhythm and rhyme) of the music you selected. You may write more than three verses if you would like! :-)
~You may upload a video of yourself or someone else singing it or just send me your lyrics.
~Have fun!

Here are a few more examples of ballads. Please comment on how these compare the The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Do you have a favorite? Can you think of another song that is a ballad?

This is a true story. Dolly Parton grew up very poor in the Great Smokey Mountains in Tennessee and used to sing at church.

Ballads in Google Classroom

Ballads

Ballads
A ballad is a song that tells a story without a refrain. It has a beginning, a middle and an end.

Watch the link of the famous ballad The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vST6hVRj2A

It is based on true events of a cargo ship that sank on Lake Superior in 1975. Pay close attention to the lyrics he wrote, how he uses loose rhyming and rhythm and the eerie music he composed. Have you ever tried to talk under water? It sounds distorted. Listen to how he makes the music sound distorted like it’s under water. I am uploading the lyrics for you as well so you can see the song verse by verse. I would like to have a “discussion” on your thoughts about the song so please comment in the class comment section.
