5th Grade Math-2019-2020 Assignments

Good Morning for the final time!
For today’s math assignment, please make a comment on this post naming one thing you liked doing in math class this year.

Some ideas could be... completing the notebook, around the world, sparkle, white boards, dry-erase on tables, zearn, IXL, fractions, decimals...etc.

I’ll use this information to make changes and adjust math class for next year. I really enjoyed teaching all of you math this year! All of your math smarts are very impressive. Keep up the great work next year in 6th grade!

Today and tomorrow are going to be 'work' days for the Final Exam.
I will not be posting any new assignments. If you have already completed the Exam, you do not have any work today. If you would like to do some work, it would be a good idea to practice on IXL. This is only if you choose.

If you have not completed the Exam yet, PLEASE do so either today or tomorrow. I have about half of them so far.

Good Morning! I hope you all enjoyed your weekend.

REMINDER : The math final exam is due Wednesday June 10th. That means it must be submitted by Wednesday. About half of you have taken it so far. If you have not, I will be sending you another reminder later today.

Good Morning!
Today we are going to review fractions further.

On IXL you must complete skill K-1 to 100. This is a refresher on fractions in general.

Once you have completed that I want you to try these three up to 50.
L - 8
M - 20
N - 5
These three cover adding/subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions.

We are also reviewing these skills in our small group sessions. If you missed your session earlier this week you are welcome to come to review today either at 10 or 10:30. I think this is helpful as we can have a conversation around the topics and you can ask any questions you might have before taking the final exam.

Today is day 3 of review.
You will be doing some fluency activities in Zearn and then practicing on IXL.

2. Complete IXL skills G-12 and G-14. Go up to 50 on each of them.

The Math Final Exam is scheduled to post at 10:00 this morning.

Today is day 2 of review. We will be practicing solving word problems. Remember to use the RDW process for these word problems. If we don't know what they are asking, we won't know what to solve for.

Today begins our week of review. Please read this update first.

I will be posting the math Final Exam on Wednesday 6/3. It will be a GoogleForm. You will need to have it complete by the following Wednesday, 6/10. You will need to have a separate sheet of paper to do the work on, but you will not need to upload any pictures of the work. You will answer the questions directly on the Form. There are 17 multiple choice questions and 3 short answers covering topics from throughout the year.

We will use this week to refresh our memories on those skills and topics.

Thursday - More Fractions

As promised, we are getting back to Zearn today. We are starting a new Topic. In this topic you will learn how to draw parallel and perpendicular lines on the coordinate plane.

Today's Objective : I can construct parallel line segments, and analyze relationships of the coordinate pairs.

Zearn will be best today if you are able to print the notes and follow along with the video.

Good Morning 5th Grade!
Today we will continue plotting points and creating lines on the coordinate plane.
Remember :
X - Coordinate comes first and tells us how many to count ACROSS
Y - Coordinate comes second and tells us how many to count UP
Be sure to label all the lines on the coordinate plane, even the lines they skip!

2. Complete page 59 #1 and 2 - If you want a challenge, try number 3 on page 60!

Today we begin a new topic within our Coordinate Plane Module. Today you will be able to plot points on the coordinate plane, connect the points to create lines, and find patterns within the coordinates pairs.

Good Monday Morning!
Today we are continuing our work in the coordinate plane. You will investigate patterns of vertical and horizontal lines and read points on the plane as distances from the axis.

VOCAB for today
Intersection - The point where two lines come together
Parallel Lines - Two straight lines that are the same distance apart forever. They never touch.
Perpendicular Lines - two lines that intersect to form a right angle.

To do for today:
1. Complete Zearn Lesson 5
2. Complete Numbers 1 and 2 on page 31 and 32 in your book.

Good Morning 5th Grade!
Today we are going to try something a little different in math. There is no Zearn to complete today. Instead, you are going to 'turn in' an Exit Ticket for the first time and then do some practice using IXL.

To do BY Monday:

1. Complete Exit Ticket 2. Take a picture and turn it in to me (as an attachment) in a private comment. If you need help, look back at page 9 and 10.

2. IXL skill U - 1. Go until you reach 100.

OPTIONAL
1. Use page 23 and 24 to challenge a family member to a game of 'coordinate plane battleship'. I've included a couple pictures from the book to help get you started. (Screenshot 5 and 6)

Today is Day 2 of our coordinate planes module. Today you will take the number line from yesterday one step further and create a coordinate plane using perpendicular lines.

Today is the beginning of Module 6. In this module we will be working with number lines (which you know) and coordinate planes (which we will learn). As we move through the unit you will move from locating points on a number line, to locating points on coordinate planes, to plotting points and drawing lines and figures on your planes, then finally solving complex problems combining all the skills you learned throughout the unit.

Today, day 1, is an easy, warm-up kind of day. In Zearn you will be re-familiarized with the number line, how to find points on it, and how to plot points on it.

For today:
1. Complete Zearn Lesson 1
2. Complete page 5 and 6 in your book.

Today we will put all our knowledge of shapes and their properties to the test. The objective for today is 'I can classify two-dimensional figures based on properties.' You will be able to define what shape the question is describing based on its characteristics.

Today we are onto the last shape we will learn about. The SQUARE. This shape includes characteristics from all the other shapes we have learned about and combines them into one.

To do for today:
1. Complete Zearn Lesson 19 (this is the only work I am officially assigning today, no book work)

OPTIONAL:
If you would like extra practice in identifying shapes based on their properties, you can practice on IXL skill BB 10. This will show you pictures of shapes and ask you to 'select all the shapes that are rectangles' for example.

Good Morning and Happy Earth Day!
Today we are continuing our exploration of shapes. Today's shape is a RHOMBUS.
The objective for today is 'I can describe the properties of a rhombus and draw one. I can describe the differences and similarities between a rhombus and a rectangle.'

2. Complete pages 109 and 110 in your book. (Lesson 18 HW)

Good Morning!
Yesterday we learned about characteristics of a Trapezoid. Today we are getting even more specific and learning about Parallelograms.
A Parallelogram has all the same characteristics as a Trapezoid EXCEPT it has TWO pairs of parallel lines rather than just ONE.

Today we will also practice working with angles. I believe you have learned the basics last year so we will pick up there. I will link a helpful video below that goes over the basics again. The most important things to remember today is how we classify angles based on their size.
Right Angle - Measures exactly 90 degrees (corner of a room)
Acute Angle - Measures less than 90 degrees (small)
Obtuse Angle - Measures more than 90 degrees (big)

This week in math we are moving on from Volume and will be exploring different shapes and their characteristics.

Today for math you will be finding the volume of an object that consists of two rectangular prisms. The way we do this is by breaking the object down into two smaller, easier to work with rectangular prisms, finding the volume of each, and adding them together.

2. Complete page 37 in your book. *The video below is from embarc. It walks you through the work on page 37. Try doing the problems on your own first, then if you are having trouble, watch the video, the man explains step by step how he solves each problem.*

Today for math you have two assignments to complete.

2. Complete page 21 in your Mod 5 book. (The volume of the rectangular prism will stay the same in your chart, your job is to de-construct, or break down, the prism in more than one way. Ex: you can have 2 layers of 12 cubes or 4 layers of 6 cubes and the volume is still 24 cubes.

Today you get the chance to show what you know when it comes to multiplying and dividing fractions!
Make sure you are reading the directions, using RDW, using correct strategies, and checking your work. I have added in some 'tips from Mr. Murray' to help you get started. If you are still struggling, look back in your math book for the lessons teaching that topic. We have learned how to do everything in this packet.

Work on this at your own pace. I will be posting the answers to it TOMORROW, so do not rush today. If you have any questions please comment on this post or send me a private message. When you finish with this, you are finished with math for today.

The spacing might look a little weird on your computer, that is just the way it had to be to get all the questions to appear. You can print this packet and complete right on it, or you can copy the questions onto a separate sheet and answer on there.
