Primary Functions: A Catholic School Elementary Music Teacher is responsible for delivering a comprehensive music education program to elementary students in a faith-based environment. This role encompasses the teaching of musical concepts, skills, and appreciation, while also integrating Catholic values, moral education, and faith into the music curriculum. The teacher will create an engaging and inclusive learning environment, fostering students' creativity, musical talents, and spiritual growth.
Essential Core Qualities:
● Comfortable with leading prayer and sharing faith with students and staff.
● Experience implementing Music lessons aligned with NYS Standards.
● Effective classroom management skills, knowledge of curriculum, including planning, execution, and evaluation of materials, supplies, and lessons.
● Strong Music background.
● Character traits necessary to teach young children - enthusiasm, warmth, and dedication.
● Ability to differentiate instruction and believes in an inclusive learning environment.
● Strong verbal and written communication and teaming skills.
● Technology skills for student management tasks and instruction.
● Open to instructional coaching and to other teachers in classroom.
● Act as a role model and life longer learner for students in living out the Catholic faith through music
Responsibilities:
● Music Instruction:
o Plan and deliver music lessons that align with the school's curriculum and educational standards.
o Teach fundamental music concepts, including vocal and instrumental techniques, music theory, rhythm, and composition.
o Promote an appreciation of various musical genres, styles, and cultures.
● School Children’s Choir:
o Responsible for the recruitment, development and direction of the School Children’s Choir.
o Schedule necessary rehearsals for the School Children’s Choir in conjunction with the Director of Lay & Liturgical Ministry
o In conjunction with Clergy and Parish Director of Music Ministry, responsible for the selection and implementation of appropriate liturgical music for School Masses, Catholic Schools Week Mass, Graduation, May Crowning, School Stations of the Cross and other ceremonies as needed.
o In conjunction with the Parish Director of Music Ministry, create digital worship aides (Google slides) for School Masses, Catholic Schools Week Mass, Graduation, May Crowning, School Stations of the Cross and other ceremonies as needed.
o Submit weekly music repertoire to Parish Director of Music Ministry for appropriate licensing reporting. The Director will submit the reports.
● Catholic Integration:
o Infuse Catholic values and teachings into music lessons and activities, reinforcing the faith's significance through music.
o Coordinate and participate in religious events and liturgical celebrations through music, including choir performances.
● Classroom Management:
o Create an inclusive and welcoming classroom environment where students are encouraged to express themselves through music.
o Establish and maintain classroom rules that reflect respect, responsibility, and discipline.
● Assessment and Evaluation:
o Evaluate student progress and provide timely feedback on their musical development.
o Maintain accurate records of student performance and communicate progress to parents and school administration.
● Professional Development:
o Stay current with best practices in music education, pedagogy, and educational technology.
o Attend workshops, conferences, and training to enhance teaching skills.
● Parent and Community Engagement:
o Foster positive relationships with parents and guardians through regular communication.
o Coordinate and participate in musical performances, concerts, and school events, engaging with the broader Catholic school community.
● Extra-Curricular Activities:
o Lead or participate in extracurricular music-related activities, such as Christmas musical event, talent shows, or community service projects as directed by administration.

Qualifications: The Music Teacher will be thoroughly committed to St. Gregory the Great School’s mission and vision. All candidates must enjoy working with children, have a positive attitude, and serve as a role model for students. Basic understanding and acceptance of Catholic School philosophy, understanding of child development and skills necessary to relate to students, appropriate control and discipline techniques.
Education: Master’s Degree in Music Education or related field (or in process), NYS Certification (Music), clear background check, successful completion of Protecting God’s Children.
Experience: 2-4 years experience teaching in the certified area of certification.
Special Skills: Ability to work effectively with elementary-age students in a music education context, staff, parents, and Parish community members; Proficiency in vocal and instrumental music; Experience with conflict resolution and/or crisis management; Technology skills such as but not limited to SMART Board, iPad, Chromebook, and Google classroom.
Ergonomic Requirements: The functions of this position usually performed are standing, and sitting, standard lifting, walking, carrying and other movements. Tasks involving working on a computer keyboard, involved extensive wrist and hand movement. All individuals in this position are required to perform these tasks without significant risk of injury to themselves or others, or to otherwise demonstrate or explain how they can perform the essential functions listed above.
