A lot of you have not submitted any writing prompt responses since we began them last week. Three are due on a weekly basis.
1. Writing prompt:
Outside the Window: What’s the weather outside your window doing right now? If that’s not inspiring, what’s the weather like somewhere you wish you could be? This is the second of the 3 due by the end of the week.
2. Review your 10 words and the definitions you found on Monday.
3. Find synonyms for each of the 10 words and write them on a Google Doc.
A synonym is a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase.
For example, shut is a synonym of close. Bossing means the same as controlling. Kind means the same as thoughtful.
4. On the same Google Doc, find antonyms for each of the 10 words.
An antonym is a word that means the opposite of another word.
For example, the antonym of hot would be cold. Near is the opposite of far. Nice is the opposite of mean.
5. Come back here and attach the file to me to submit right on the assignment. To do so, do the following:
Under Your work, click Add or create and then select Google Drive and click your acrostic poem from your own drive
If you cannot figure it out, just share the Doc with me how you normally would do!

Due:
1. Writing prompt:
If you had the power to eliminate one thing from the world, what would you choose to get rid of? Why?
2. Watch the video introducing free verse poems: https://safeshare.tv/x/ss5ea6d106d53c9#
If that link does not work, please use this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yar6BaZOqI&t=6s
3. To review, a free verse poem is a popular style of modern poetry, and as its name suggests there is a fair amount of freedom when it comes to writing a poem like this. Free verse can rhyme or not, it can have as many lines or stanzas as the poet wants, and it can be about anything you like! So, while free verse may sound simple enough, the lack of rules makes this form of poetry tricky to master!
4. Review some examples of free verse poems attached.
5. In a Google Doc, create your own free verse poem. Remember, make it sound like it is you that is talking and follow the theme of humor. Make it funny.
6. Type your poem on a Google Doc. Come back here and attach the file to me to submit right on the assignment. To do so, do the following:
Under Your work, click Add or create and then select Google Drive and click your poem from your own drive
If you cannot figure it out, just share the Doc with me how you normally would do!

Due:
1. Begin with your writing prompt for the day. Remember, I’d love if you had a notebook collection of all your writings and you just sent me a picture from your notebook. Or you can send it to me on a Google Doc. Be DESCRIPTIVE AND DETAILED (10 sentences AT LEAST).
Today’s writing prompt:
It has rained and snowed a lot this month. How do April showers make you feel? What are your rainy day activities?
2. Watch the video introducing limericks: https://safeshare.tv/x/ss5ea6cee3562c9#
If that link does not work, please use this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wy65TkCadfU&t=4s
3. To review, a limerick is traditionally a five line poem with an AABBA rhyme scheme. You're probably wondering what all that means! A rhyme scheme is a pattern of rhyming lines in poetry. In a limerick's AABBA rhyme scheme, the first, second, and fifth lines rhyme with each other, and the third and fourth lines rhyme with one another. There is also a pattern of syllables in the rhyming lines. In the A lines, the lines usually have eight or nine syllables, and in the B lines, there are usually five or six syllables. Lastly, and most importantly, limericks are supposed to be fun, silly, and witty! The limericks typically start out with an introduction to a person or character, and they end with a 'punch line.'
4. Review some examples of limericks I attached.
5. Create your own rhyming and silly limerick on a Google Doc. Remember to follow the theme of humor and make it funny.

PLEASE WATCH MY VIDEO FOR SOME UPDATES AND INFORMATION! 🤓
1. We are going to begin each day with a writing prompt. I expect everyone to provide me at least 1 paragraph (10 sentences minimum) 3 times a week. You will decide which 3 of the 5 days you would like to submit your work to me. If you submit only a couple sentences, it will not count. You can do this is in your ELA free-write journal (not your 3-subject ELA notebook) if you brought it home and send me a picture. Or you can write it on a Doc and share with me. I would love it if you can write it by hand and share it with me for two reasons. We need to get back to writing since we’ve been doing a lot of electronic writing AND it’s great to keep a collection of your quarantine writing pieces. So you can take a picture and attach a photo of your writing the same way you would attached a Doc when you turn it in. (Go to Add/Create, click on file, and pick your picture). Or, if you have paper or another notebook sitting around at home, use that! Today’s prompt:
Would you rather parachute from a plane, cross Niagara Falls on a tightrope, or sail around the world by yourself? Why? Be DESCRIPTIVE AND DETAILED!
2. Watch the video introducing cinquain poems: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=To63NIx2Ffo
3. To review, a cinquain poem is an example of shape poetry. Because of the exact number of words required for each line of this poem, a unique, symmetrical shape is created from interesting, descriptive words. The word cinquain comes from the Latin root for “five.”
Notice that the cinquain has five lines that follow this sequence:
Line A: One vague or general one-word subject or topic
Line B: Two vivid adjectives that describe the topic
Line C: Three interesting -ing action verbs that fit the topic
Line D: Four-word phrase that captures feeling about the topic
Line E: A very specific term that explains Line A
4. Review my examples of cinquain poems.
5. Write your own cinquain poem in a Google Doc. Follow the theme of humor and make it funny.

1. Watch the introduction of a haiku: https://safeYouTube.net/w/ypY5

Though there are different ways to write haiku, the traditional pattern in English is to write the first and last lines with five syllables each, and the middle line with seven syllables. In other words, the pattern of syllables looks like this:
Line 1: 5 syllables
Line 2: 7 syllables
Line 3: 5 syllables
3. View some of the haikus I attached for examples.

1. Watch the video to learn about what a stanza is: https://safeYouTube.net/w/DTX5
2. Stanza - A group of lines in a poem, separated by space from other stanzas, much like a paragraph
Ex. (First Stanza)
I love to write
Day and night
What would my heart do
But cry, sigh, and be blue
If I could not write
(Space to separate stanzas)
(Second Stanza)
Writing feels good
And I know it should
Who could have knew
That what I do
Is write, write, write.
*The easiest way to remember what a stanza is is to think of it like paragraphs just in the form of poetry.
3. Your task today is to write me a 3 stanza poem following this format:
Stanza 1 - When I was a baby,
Stanza 2 - When I was in kindergarten,
Stanza 3 -Now that I am in grade 5,
See my example and TRY to make it rhyme if you are up for the challenge!

1. Read all 9 personal writing prompts.
2. Choose 3 and write 3 paragraphs on the Google Form attached (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/14K6aXk7587oS27jJ7HQ1Pefu57YMp1GerYaOMBS44iM/edit)
YOU MUST USE proper structure (restate - give at least 2 supporting details - sum it up/give a good concluding sentence). I will be checking for these things. Please also make sure you are using capitals when you need capitals - no "i" for "I went to...", names should be capital, use proper punctuation, and spelling. Use spell check - this is good to help you see what words you are spelling wrong and how to fix them.
3. "Turn In" when you are done.
