Dear all,

I hope you had a good long weekend. On Saturday at 4pm I married my best friend, the girl of my dreams, in front of only our witnesses, parents, and Fr. Tom Mahoney. It certainly wasn't the wedding we had planned, but it was, in spite of everything, perfect. We got to declare our love to one another before God, and nothing, not even a pandemic, could stop us from doing so. Never be afraid to fight for what you love... it really is the most important thing there is.

In His peace,

Dr. S

P.S. Avery the dog says 'hi'. Between you and me he's getting a bit doughy, so I think he's going to need a few more walks than he's been getting. Please don't tell him I said that!
Meet Kyra (on the left) and Bailey! Bailey recently took on the responsibility of being a big brother and is doing a great job in spite of the fact that Kyra, who's only 11 weeks old, is still in that 'nippy' phase. When Kyra's not falling asleep in people's arms, both she and Bailey love playing outside - let's hope it warms up and dries up soon!

How the Human Spent his Easter - A Report by Avery the Dog

Hello Humans of St. Gregs!

Hope you had a prayerful and enjoyable Easter break. The human you know as 'Dr. Stevens' and myself began our time to ourselves nice and quietly, going on walks, reading, praying, and singing songs to keep the blues away. Things took a turn for the weird a few days ago, when the human learned that the house he had bought together with his fiancee well before this craziness began was going to close on Friday. My human is now a home-owner! Now, I'll be honest with you, I'm a LITTLE upset, because the human still hasn't allowed me to stop by and give it my own seal of approval just yet (a lot of work still needs to be done, he says), but he promises me that he'll bring me over later this week, and when he does, I'll be sure to take some photos for you!

I've still got furry friends that I've yet to introduce everyone to, and that will be coming, but for now be good and stay safe, and know that you are all in my and the human's prayers.

Meet Kelsie! She has been holding up very well during this extended period with her family. She's taking lots of of naps and loves to snuggle.

Meet Penelope! She's a regal black bunny who loves to explore and prefers eating Christmas lights to the more traditional veggies and rabbit-kibble. Penelope is especially happy today because it just so happens to be the birthday of her human, Izzy! Happy Birthday, Izzy!!!

Meet Lizzie Lulu! She's an 11-year-old rescue from a Texas puppy mill three weeks ago who's still looking good, even though her groomer had to cancel her recent appointment.

Meet Casey (on the left) and Katie! Casey's a dignified almost 18-year-old kitty who doesn't let a thing thing like poor eyesight keep her away from her food-bowl. Katie likes food, snuggles, even if she has to push open doors to get them!

Meet Mack (on the left) and Maddie! They're very good woofers (who DO enjoy woofing!) even though they may not always follow 'social distancing' guidelines...

A Request from Avery the Dog: How are your pets??

Hello Humans of St. Greg's!

Avery here again, hoping you enjoyed as nice a weekend as the human you know as 'Dr. Stevens' and I did (we went for walks, read some good books, and even made a pizza last night!). Through this all I've been wondering something: how are your animal friends doing in the midst of all this? I don't think I'm the only one who wants to know either, so if your parents email a photo of your pet to my human at [email protected] along with your pet's name and how they're spending the time with you all (as well as their permission to upload it here), I'll feature one of them on this page each day so that we can see how we're all in this together. In the meantime though, I think I can wrangle a treat from the human!

Woof, woof, woof,

Avery the dog

Please consider joining the Holy Father and the Church throughout the world, as well as Avery the dog and myself, at 1pm our time for a period of prayer and then an Extraordinary 'Urbi et Orbi' ("to the city [of Rome] and the world") Blessing. During that time I'll be praying in a special way for each of you and your families.

in His peace,

Dr. S

An Update from Avery the Dog: Making Memories!

Hello Humans of St. Greg’s!

Avery the dog here again. Are any of you struggling to get used to this strange routine we find ourselves in? Me too! There are a bunch of things, places, and people that I miss a whole bunch. The human you know as ‘Dr. Stevens’ keeps telling me (and himself too, I think) to cheer up, because we’re making memories. I’ve got to admit, it was getting a little annoying at first, but then I started thinking about it, and maybe you should too, especially if you’ve found yourself getting bored or sad or just missing the way things used to be. We are living in WEIRD times. They’re SO weird that someday your grandkids will ask you about them! Have you thought about that? That many years from now, when things have returned to normal, people, who never lived through these times, will ask us about them, and want to know what we did during the weridness. What will you tell them? That you sat around and were bored, or that you read some great new books, played fun games, enjoyed the spring weather, and helped take care of your family? We all have the choice to decide how we’re going to react to this situation, so that when the time comes, we can all tell the people who come after us the very best story possible.

The human is really trying to do this himself. You may not know this, but he was going to be getting married in a few months. The human misses his fiancée very much. They both talk on the phone and over Skype every day, but when all this started, they agreed to keep their distance from each other, because they both have older parents that they don’t want to get sick. I miss her too (she gives good face scratchies!) but not as much as the human. On top of all that, the wedding they’ve been planning is very much in doubt. But as sad as that is, the human is not going to let that get to him. He still hopes for the wedding he’d been planning, but in the event that can’t happen, he’s decided to marry his fiancée in private, with only the priest and two other people there. It’s not what they would have hoped for, but instead of letting that get them down, the human and his fiancée are determined to make a memory that some day they can tell their own grandkids! I hope that all of you can go out and make some memories of your own during this time – someday you WILL be asked about it!

Woof woof woof,

Avery the dog

An Update from Avery the Dog: The Power of Prayer

Hello Humans of St. Greg's!

Avery the dog here again, and I just wanted to share with you a bit of what's going on around in my world. It's been a long few days for the human you know as 'Dr. Stevens' and myself - we've had moments of boredom and periods when we REALLY miss those people we care about. But we're trying not to let it all get to us, because we both decided at the very beginning of this mess to work on deepening our relationship with God. The human and I have really tried to make prayer our central focus during this time of isolation - we pray when we wake up, and right before we go to bed, in addition to throughout our day. A lot of humans think prayer involves being silent and quiet, and while it *can* it definitely doesn't have to! One of my favorite ways the human prays is when he says his Rosary on walks. He gets to pray a beautiful prayer and we both get to experience the beauty of God's creation. Another way the human likes to pray is to share with me all the ways in which God has blessed him. It's a great prayer, because after starting with the obvious (me of course, his family, and all of you) he begins to discover new and wonderful ways in which God has blessed him that he wouldn't have even thought of on his own! Have you been praying while you're at your homes?

I wanted to write this message to you, because the human keeps on talking about two very important things which will be happening this week. First, he says the Holy Father, Pope Francis, has asked all Christians throughout the world to unite spiritually by praying  the 'Our Father' together tomorrow, March 25th, at noon. Then on Friday, at 1pm local time, the pope will be live-streaming a prayer service which will end with the 'Urbi et Orbi' (which the human, a Latin teacher, tells me means 'to the city [of Rome] and the world')-blessing, which popes really only give at Christmas and Easter. The 'Urbi et Orbi'-blessing carries with it a plenary indulgence, which the human tells me forgives all the effects of one's sins -- that's a BIG deal! The human will try to get streaming links up for you well in advance, but in the meantime please say a prayer for him and for me, and know that we're praying for YOU.
